Klein Cain Rolls Past Magnolia West, 58–7, to Stay Unbeaten

Klein Cain took control early and never let Magnolia West back in it.

The Hurricanes built a 41–0 halftime lead and rolled to a 58–7 road win Friday at Mustang Stadium, improving to 4–0 overall and 2–0 in District 15-6A. Cain's defense forced turnovers, its offense scored on the ground and through the air, and the Mustangs spent their homecoming night trying to keep up.

A week after beating Tomball 55–38, Cain delivered its most decisive win of the season. Dave Campbell's Texas Football had projected a 22-point Hurricanes victory. Cain won by 51.

Defense sets the tone

Jerod Spraberry (#6) ended Magnolia West's opening possession with an interception and returned it to the Mustangs' 18-yard line. Jace Hanks (#9) finished the short drive with a five-yard touchdown keeper, and Sage DesAutels (#4) added the extra point for a 7–0 lead.

The Hurricanes kept the pressure on. After Cain's defense stopped Magnolia West on fourth-and-inches, Hanks found Cooper Karns (#10) for a 45-yard touchdown. Karns broke a tackle and took it the rest of the way, putting Cain ahead 14–0.

Braylon Francis (#20) helped stretch the lead early in the second quarter. The backup running back followed a long gain along the sideline with a run inside the 3, then finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown.

Eyan Johnson (#16) powered the next scoring drive, dragging defenders for roughly 20 yards before Karns added a catch-and-run of about 50. Johnson scored from six yards out to make it 27–0 after a blocked extra point.

Then Easton Mizell (#47) delivered the biggest defensive play of the half: a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown. Cain led 34–0 with 4:46 remaining.

The defense gave the offense another possession when a Cain cornerback forced a fumble after a catch. Hanks capped the half with a 30-yard touchdown run, his second rushing score of the night.

At the break, the Hurricanes led 41–0.

Cain keeps rolling after halftime

Johnson opened Cain's second-half scoring with a 59-yard touchdown run up the middle. DesAutels added a 29-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Reggie Yarbough (#15) intercepted another Magnolia West pass.

Earl Oguinn Jr. (#1) broke loose for a 66-yard touchdown run with six seconds left in the third, extending the lead to 58–0.

Magnolia West avoided the shutout with 3:58 remaining when Madden McGehee scored on a nine-yard sweep. The Mustangs finished with 138 yards of total offense.

Cain's defensive effort went well beyond the takeaways. Colton Johnson (#40) recorded a tackle for loss, and the Hurricanes added sacks and stops behind the line throughout the first half.

Confidence without complacency

Before kickoff, senior receiver Cooper Karns told Cain Game Day the Hurricanes needed "to not get comfortable coming off a big win last week and play with confidence."

Johnson's message was direct: "we gotta keep our foot on the gas. We can't get complacent."

Cain followed through. The Hurricanes entered Friday averaging 47.3 points per game and surpassed that mark while holding Magnolia West to a single late touchdown.

The win was Cain's fifth straight dating back to last season and its third consecutive victory over Magnolia West since the teams became district opponents in 2024.

Next comes a shorter turnaround. The Hurricanes host Klein Collins on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Klein Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The Tigers are coming off a Friday win over Klein Forest.
