Klein Collins Rallies Past Klein Cain, 40–24, to Stay Tied for First

Saturday morning finished what Thursday night started, and it finished with Klein Collins tied with Klein for first place in District 15-6A.

The Tigers scored 33 points after play resumed and beat Klein Cain 40–24 Saturday at Klein Memorial Stadium, erasing the 14–7 deficit they faced when weather postponed Thursday's game in the second quarter. Collins improved to 5–1 overall and 4–0 in District 15-6A. The Hurricanes fell to 4–1 and 2–1 in district play.

Cain led 24–14 at halftime Saturday. Collins outscored the Hurricanes 26–0 after the break. Dave Campbell's had picked the Tigers by 8. They won by 16.

Thursday night: the 14–7 start

Cain's opening drive stalled on fourth down after Tyson Freeman (#17) made a five-yard catch on third-and-8, and the punt sailed into the end zone. Collins struck first on a long Brylon Jefferson (#18) touchdown pass to Tylan Penright (#14), and the extra point made it 7–0 Tigers.

Eyan Johnson (#16) answered immediately, returning the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to tie it at 7–7. Asked afterward when he knew he was gone, Johnson said: "I knew as soon as the ball touched my hands!"

Cain took the lead in the second quarter. Jace Hanks (#9) ripped off a 23-yard keeper, Israel Smith (#8) caught a pass and carried it 20 yards to the 3, and Earl Oguinn Jr. (#1) scored from a direct snap. The extra point made it 14–7.

The defense did its part before the sky opened. Jaemin Gilstrap (#42) dropped a runner for a six-yard loss, and Michael Rhodes Jr. (#49) recorded a strip-sack that Collins managed to recover. Hanks added a 15-yard run and Cooper Karns (#10) took a catch-and-run to the Collins 15 before the weather delay ended the night.

Saturday morning: Cain stretches it to 24–14

Play resumed at 10:00 AM with 9:45 left in the second quarter and Cain facing first-and-goal. Collins kept the Hurricanes out of the end zone, but Sage DesAutels (#4) drilled a 22-yard field goal to make it 17–7.

Collins answered with its best drive of the half. Easton Mizell (#47) broke up a pass and Christian Lovell (#45) recorded a tackle for loss, but on third-and-long Penright hauled in a 40-yard catch-and-run, Demarcus Jones added a 20-yard run on third-and-9, and Jefferson finished it with a touchdown run up the middle. The extra point cut it to 17–14 with 2:50 left in the half.

After a 20-yard screen to Karns, a 35-yard screen to Oguinn, an intentional grounding flag and a false start, Cain faced second-and-25 from its own 42. Hanks escaped a near-sack, somehow got loose and ran for the first down.

Two Oguinn runs of five yards each moved the chains again, and on first-and-goal from the 9, Hanks tucked it and scored at the right pylon. The extra point made it 24–14.

Penright's big kickoff return gave Collins one last shot from the Cain 18. Jaiden Pacheco (#28) sacked Jefferson, the Tigers stalled, and with 12 seconds left Aldridge shanked a field-goal attempt. Halftime: Cain 24, Collins 14.

Second half: all Tigers

Collins took the second-half kickoff at its 20 and marched. Harmon (#6) carried the load, Penright made a contested grab over tight coverage from Michael Elhindi (#2), and even with Gilstrap repeatedly disrupting the backfield and forcing two holding penalties, Jefferson found #1 for the touchdown. The extra point made it 24–21 with 8:02 left in the third.

Cain's next drive stalled at its own 34, and after the punt Collins struck again. Harmon broke loose for a touchdown run of about 50 yards, putting the Tigers ahead 28–24 with 5:18 left in the quarter.

Cain punted again, but the Hurricane defense kept swinging. Gilstrap's pressure helped force an incompletion on third down, and Collins eventually punted into the end zone on fourth-and-11. Karns' slant on third-and-10 moved the chains to end the quarter with Cain at its own 31, trailing 28–24.

The fourth quarter belonged to Jefferson and the Collins offense. After another Cain punt, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Hurricanes gave the Tigers an automatic first down. Harmon followed with a 25-yard keeper, Jefferson ran for another first down, and Jefferson eventually scored on a sneak from the 1.

The extra point was blocked, leaving Collins ahead 34–24 with 7:41 left. Pacheco was shaken up during the drive but walked off under his own power.

Hanks was intercepted under pressure down the right sideline, giving Collins the ball at the Cain 21. Penright moved the Tigers to the 11, Christian recorded another tackle for loss and Mizell blew up a Harmon keeper before Jefferson found Penright on fourth down from the 14 for another touchdown.

Rhodes blocked his second extra point of the game, keeping it 40–24 with 3:46 to play.

Freeman added an 18-yard catch on Cain's next possession, but Hanks was intercepted again at midfield with 3:31 left. Collins tried to close it out on the ground, but Cain's defense produced one last stand. Mizell stuffed Jefferson on third-and-4, and Hudson was stopped on fourth-and-3.

Cain got the ball back with 1:40 left. Hanks scrambled for 30 yards plus a 15-yard late-hit penalty, moving the Hurricanes to the Collins 34. Karns added a 15-yard catch on third-and-long, but fourth-and-5 fell incomplete with 37 seconds left.

Collins kneeled it out.

The defense deserves its due

The scoreboard says 40–24, but the Hurricane defense made plenty of plays in a hard-fought loss. Gilstrap spent much of the game disrupting the Collins backfield, forcing holding penalties and hurrying throws. Christian recorded multiple tackles for loss, while Mizell broke up a pass, blew up a keeper and helped produce the final fourth-down stand.

Rhodes blocked two extra points and added Thursday's strip-sack. Elhindi delivered a big breakup on Penright, and Pacheco's sack helped force the missed field goal at the end of the first half.

Even after Collins took control, Cain's defense kept competing through the final possession.
